Far Cry 6 – Review (SPOILER FREE)

Far Cry is perhaps one of the few video game franchises that need no introduction. Ubisoft’s blockbuster open-world FPS has been one of the most popular titles for two decades. And the latest entry, Far Cry 6, cements a solid entry into a series we’ve all come to love.
Unlike the grasslands of the US, Far Cry 6 takes place in the tropical islands of Yara, filled with lush vegetation and gorgeous coastlines. Players are put in the shoes of Dani Rojas, an ex-military man or woman, depending on your choice of character. The country has been taken over by a democratically elected leader turned dictator – Anton Castillo. Castillo is played by none other than the famous Giancarlo Esposito, who you might know from the TV show Breaking Bad.
A revolution is brewing, and the game starts smack in the middle of it. With the country’s militant forces behind you, you’re forced to escape to an island where you meet Libertad, Yara’s own guerillas trying to liberate the country, and thus begins our epic adventure.
Far Cry 6 draws some impressive and uncanny parallels to the present global sociopolitical scenarios, and it’s great to see how the story pulls it off with aplomb. There is a whole host of characters, each with their own backstory and struggles. On our journey to unite them under a singular cause, we come across almost every kind of person you’d imagine, and they all have their own unique voices. Even the protagonist, who, for the first time has a proper personality and isn’t a blank slate for the player to project on.
The gameplay is seriously impressive too. Not only does it have all the elements of Far Cry that we’ve enjoyed for so long, but it also adds some refreshing and welcome changes to keep the game enjoyable throughout its entirety. One of our favourites is the supremo, which are basically backpacks doubling up as unique weapons. From homing missiles to EMP fields to healing kits, they come in almost every kind of variant you’d want. And collecting them is fairly easy as well, you can unlock every supremo well before you’re done with the game. This means you’ll be playing the majority of the game with a wide variety of weapons in your arsenal, helping you chip away at the dictatorship, one explosion after another.
Another big change is that there are no longer any towers to climb and reveal the map and unlock fast travel points. In fact, once you reach the first camp, you can unlock every single fast travel point by buying hideout locations using Yaran Pesos that you loot from enemies and various containers found in the environment. This was quite literally a game-changer for us as it has an effect on the pace of the game. And the less time you spend running around looking for towers, the more you can take fights and kill enemies. Horseriding is also a big part of the game, and while the controls are a bit clunky, it feels much better than riding the ATV that topples quite easily.
The guns feel good, and by the time you get to the middle of the game, you’ll have a lot of options to choose from. You can modify weapons at the trusty workbench, which means different kinds of ammo and attachments. This gives the player a lot of freedom when it comes to the gameplay style, and you can lead the revolution as you see fit. After all, every guerilla needs the right tool for the right job.
When it comes to the story, it’s pretty straightforward tale of revolution, but within it, there are quite a few twists and turns to look forward too. The voice actors have done a phenomenal job as well, and you can’t help but be impressed by Giancarlo Esposito’s talent. Far Cry has always done a great job of creating memorable villains, and Anton Castillo is definitely one to remember.
Far Cry 6 Performance – FSR and The AMD Advantage
If you’re running Far Cry 6 on the PC, you’re in for quite an experience. Not only is the game a treat for the eyes, but the performance is buttery smooth and hits the sweet spot in more ways than one. But before we get into details, take a look at the PC requirements to run the game at various settings.

As you see, there is a comprehensive set of requirements available for every setting. And these are just the baseline, since our experience shows that the game has been well optimized for PC, thanks to AMD’s partnership with Ubisoft. Meaning that even on these specs, you can get better performance than what the chart says. Take a look at our 1440p benchmarks for a good idea.
And it gets even better, because there’s one thing we haven’t mentioned yet, and it’s quite the game-changer – AMD’s FSR upscaling. It can easily take your 1080p GPU to a 1440p one, and your 1440p GPU to a 4K one without a major drop in visual quality. AMD’s new drivers help you make full use of the technologies provided, offering the best experience you can ask for. Even with ray tracing on, you can expect to get the best performance from your AMD card with FSR making it easier to run the game at the highest resolution possible. Of course, you can always tweak the graphical settings to your heart’s content, but even with the Ultra preset, the framerate never dropped below 60FPS for us. The game runs impressively well across three whole generations of graphics cards, and it’s all thanks to FSR.
Another neat feature is FidelityFX CAS, which sharpens up the image for some fine detail. Anyone who plays FPS games regularly is sure to appreciate it, as it makes it much easier to spot and aim at enemies, for some sweet headshots. Since Far Cry 6 uses TAA for anti-aliasing, by default the object edges can seem a little blurred out for comfort. Plus, it can also lead to some loss in detail and consequently, the image quality. In such cases, FidelityFX CAS is nothing less than a boon. The edges look much sharper and all that lost detail is brought back, making the game look even better than the original image. Every game needs an option like that, and we’re sure glad Far Cry 6 has it from the start.
Far Cry 6 is a beautiful game, in more ways than one. Not only is it an awe-inspiring experience when it comes to visual quality, one can’t help but feel immersed in the deeply detailed world Ubisoft has so meticulously created. For both new players and old-timers, it is the quintessential Far Cry experience.
