PlayStation Stars announced: A loyalty program for gamers

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced PlayStation Stars, a new loyalty program that will be free to join when it launches later in 2022.

PlayStation Stars members will be able to earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities. In the “Monthly Check-In” campaign you can play games to receive a reward, while other campaigns may need you to win tournaments and earn specific trophies.

Members will also be able to earn loyalty points, which can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PlayStation Network wallet funds and selected PlayStation Store products.

Another kind of reward Sony is offering is digital collectibles, which are 3D rendered representations of things like figurines of video game characters and past Sony devices. Some will be ultra rare and hard to obtain. They aren’t non-fungible tokens, despite also being digital and collectible.

“It’s definitely not NFTs. Definitely not. You can’t trade them or sell them. It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs,” said Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise in an interview with The Washington Post.
